I have been looking for information on the use of spray foam on the exterior of a home.
I've seen a little info on the subject. Enough to know that it is done.
I'm interested in trying this on our home.
I need to know about door and window details.
Also what coverings are used to protect the foam?

Go to Sprayfoam.org and click on magazine and then go to back issues. The October 2006 issue has that article

There is a house there that they did an article on. It is not the house I originally referred to. The first house of this type of construction I saw had a much more adobe look to it. I was informed by somebody that knew the home that it was SFI covered by Stucco. The stucco used a special adhesives to attach the chicken wire and stucco to the foam. Thus not having any thermal penetrations.
I also saw a pole barn - tool shed completely sprayed on the outside. I am planning on doing this to my tool shed. My shed needs to be sealed, Painted & insulated. Doing it this way will kill 3 birds with one stone.
The tool shed got me thinking about the house. After a little investigation I found that there are people actually doing the process already.
But apparently not many. I can find little info online and I haven't found a stucco guy that knows about attaching stucco without going through the insul to attach it.

II have seen this approach in doing retro applications. You take an old house and tear the siding off and apply it to the outside and then cover it. But using it as a finished product would work just the same as using SFI as a roof coating. You will need to coat the foam with something to protect it from UV damage and discoloration.

You will also want to use closed cell foam due to its low expansion rate and water resistance. You will basically use the foam in place of Tyvek and get insulation as well.

My partner sprayed some 2.7# closed cell foam down on his roof and coated it with some white roof coating. It worked great. No more shingles to replace, its hard enough to walk on, and its insulated from the sun.

Best of luck, hope I was helpful

I have also seen pics of a completed home that had an adobe look to it. My local SPF contractor is interested but doesn't know what coatings are available for this verticle application. any specifics would be greatly appreciated.

It can be done, but it needs to be properly applied to look acceptable. Mike Belleau does a lot of this in Jersey.

We do this type of application almost daily. We use a 2 lb. density closed cell foam. We can apply it to almost any substrate, wood, metal, masonry etc. We do crawl spaces, roof sheathing, stud walls. Its the best product available as it add structural integrity to a building. It is a moistur barrier. R value is typically R6.5 to 7 per inch.

One of the most important energy-saving materials in a home is the insulation. Without insulation, many of the other energy-efficient components, like energy efficient heating and cooling equipment and windows, won't perform as intended. Building codes cite the minimal amount of insulation needed by law. In general, more insulation, or insulation with a higher R-value, will help to make the home more efficient and comfortable year round.

I have a friend who is putting together a flyer and is looking for any images that would show the outcome of the spray, like foam on the water, or dead birds, or anything else that you have seen.

He is also looking for any possible images of the man who had the
